This database is an index to approximately 707,000 individuals who were married in select areas of Illinois between 1851 and 1900. A complete list of the counties included in this index is provided below. Information that may be found in this database for each individual includes their name, gender, spouse's name, marriage date, location, and source information. Marriage records are great sources for genealogists because they document an individual in a particular place and time as well as provide details about that person's marriage. Note: This index is not comprehensive. Therefore, if you do not find your ancestor in this index it does not necessarily mean that the marriage did not exist in the time and place in which you expected it.

It is important that you use the information found in this database to locate your ancestor in the original records that this index references. Usually more information is available in the records themselves than is found in an index. For example, marriage records sometimes provide the birth dates and places of the bride and groom, their parents' names, their addresses, and witnesses' names, in addition to the information listed in this index.

About marriages in Illinois:

Marriage records were the first vital records kept by Illinois counties, some of them commencing with the formation of the county. Indexes of marriage records have been kept by the Illinois Department of Health, Division of Vital Records from 1962 through the present, but only verification will be made. Copies of the original record must be requested from the appropriate county official - county clerk for marriages and clerk of the circuit court for divorces. Individuals may not search the state records.

There are approximately 300,000 marriages representing portions of forty-three counties in the pre-1900 Illinois Statewide Marriage Index as of August 1990. This is a continuing joint project of the Illinois State Archives and the Illinois State Genealogical Society. The staff of the Illinois State Archives will search this index and send photocopies of any information found. Microfiche copies of this index may be used at the Illinois State Archives, Illinois Regional Archives Depositories, and in each local genealogical society library in Illinois.
